Why Should the Fire Die?

My Best Friends

The relationship between siblings has always fascinated me. Some can be best friends, others bitter enemies. Still more go back and forth. When I look back and think about my own relationship with my siblings, I usually smile. Usually.

We have a picture on our bookshelf of James affectionately hitting me in the head with a spatula when I was only a few months old. What a way to get off on the right foot, huh? But for every "violent" picture, like the spatula incident, there's at least ten others of the four of us, gap toothed and grinning, having such a great time together! There were the backyard picnics, the infamous mudslide, reading together on the couch surrounded by piles of picture books, playing baseball in the street, running our oh-so-prosperous lemonade stand. The list goes on and on. I'm so thankful to have shared my childhood with James, Philip, and Elizabeth. I couldn't have asked for better friends!

As the years went by, we all started going our separate ways and butting heads anytime our paths crossed. I guess that's normal. We're so close together in age that we were all hormonal messes at the same time, and (arguably) still are from time to time. Now that the baby of us all is nearly sixteen, though, I'm happy to say that we're definitely all becoming friends again and it really makes me happy! Philip and I took a road trip together back in December to the preacher's study and had a blast singing barbershop tags together (which didn't really work with only two voice parts, but oh well!). He introduced me to the new Nickel Creek album and we played the same song at least ten times in a row. It was definitely one of my favorite memories! A few months ago me and James drove thirty minutes away to a McDonald's at eleven o'clock at night because I had a craving for chicken nuggets, laughing the whole time. That's a great memory too. Elizabeth has definitely become one of my best friends over the past school year, since we spent practically every waking moment together. She laughs at all my stupid jokes, which is saying a lot! And she also sits in The Chair and listens to all the new songs I write, giving me pointers and telling me what works for her and what doesn't. She's so helpful, and never minds to do it!

Anyways, I mention all that just to say that I'm extremely grateful to have such wonderful siblings that I look up to and love very much. I wouldn't be who I am now without them and their support. I'm happy to know that they'll always be there for me, even when we're all grown up!

7 months later....

Sigh. This poor neglected website. I should really update it more, bu I don't even know who all reads these things anymore! Myspace is nifty, but it's really not a site for blogging. And I like blogging. So I reckon I'll try to update this thing too and whoever reads it can know lots of useless details about my life and such :)

I guess the biggest thing for me right now is preparing for college. Real college I mean, not just the community classes I'm taking now. A few weeks ago, right before Lebanon, I got the opportunity to visit Drury University in Springfield, MO, and I loved it! That's definitely my first choice college. Oh, and I've switched my major since I last posted (not a shocker, since that was months and months ago...). Now I'm going into Music therapy! The concept of helping people through music is such a perfect combination for me that I can't imagine myself doing anything else. Of course, being a Christian wife and mother comes first, but music therapy is a fairly flexible field. A lot of the time you create your own positions or even your own private practices. Anyhow, Drury has one of the best music therapy programs in the country, along with a fully active clinic on campus, which is extremely beneficial for observing and hands on learning. It's also about ten minutes away from my grandparents and my aunt and uncle. Being so near family will make the separation form home a little easier, and probably put my parents a bit more at ease as well!

One of the things I'm really looking forward to is being able to attend more Gospel Meetings. Living all the way out here in Ohio, there's really not time or money to travel to as many as I'd like to. Living in Springfield would make travel much easier, and I'm quite excited at the prospect. Meetings are so uplifting to me!

Speaking of meetings, I had a fantastic time at the Lebanon Fourth of July Meeting last week. The preaching was incredibly beneficial, and I feel that I'm a stronger Christian for having gone. I particularly loved George Battey's talk on Implicit and Explicit Teaching in the Bible. He explains a subject that might otherwise be difficult to grasp in a way that makes perfect sense! If you haven't heard this lesson, I hope you have the chance to at some point! It's definitely worth it!

Well I need to get ready for work. Ha, last time I posted I worked at good ole Mickey D's still. Well that's a thing of the past. I work at the local library now, sorting and reshelving books. Yup yup!

I'm curious....who still reads these?

Love y'all!

This is pitiful. My last post was in July??

I refuse to give up on this though.

My first quarter of college is nearly over, and I'm anticipating my first set of exams. I'm in the process of writing my first major term paper (25 pages...eww), and that's due at midnight tonight, so I'm also experience my biggest procrastination to date.

I am now a licensed driver and thoroughly enjoying the freedom associated with having my own car!

Marching band is over for the season, thank goodness. It was getting old. After four years of the same thing every fall, I imagine it should be getting old by now. One more year to go! Jazz band is my next musical endeavor, where I'll be playing the alto saxophone! Nope, no joke. I just decided to go for it! My director also says I can sing a few numbers with the band!!!! I've been wanting to do that for years and years, and now I'm finally getting the chance! Let's see here....I teach flute to fifth graders once a week, and also oboe to one little boy. I'm so proud of him for picking something different! As a result, I have to teach myself oboe to help him out. So once I've perfected the oboe and saxophone (haha), that'll put me at six instruments! Oh how I love music!!

Speaking of music, some of you may remember my first honor choir experience around this time last year. Well, it's that time again and Elizabeth and I have been in the process of preparing our solos. This sort of thing is alays so enjoyable for me! I want to go to CCM (College Conservatory of Music) for voice, so I imagine there's an awful lot more solo preparation in my future!

That's about all for now. I could make all these promises about keeping up with xanga again, but I can't make any guarantees. Anyhow, I hope you're all doing splendidly, and I certainly hope I'll hear from you soon!

Love,

*Hannah*

Poor Xanga....I have deserted you!

Well actually my computer wouldn't let me load the site for a very long time and I don't know why, considering the fact that my sister still gets on all the time. Anyways. I don't even know who still uses xanga, so if you do, leave a comment letting me know you're still alive! I apologize for my prolonged absence.

This summer has flown past so quickly! I've been working a lot lately, though I'm planning on leaving my fine place of employment (rolling eyes...) rather soon. Maybe after August. It's not a sudden decision, just a lot of things built up that make me want to leave. Any wonderful ideas of where I should work next??

The Fourth of July Meeting in Lebanon was wonderful as well! I always enjoy meeting up with old friends and getting to know new ones. I would post pictures, but I forget how.....sad, isn't it?

I'm now in the process of scheduling my classes for college in the fall, which is really exciting. I'm going to be taking Advanced English Composition II, which is actually an online course which shall be interesting, Trigonometry (for the Autumn quarter, calculus for winter and spring), Chemistry (only because I have to...ew), Spanish, and Plagues and Witches. I have a feeling that last one is going to be my favorite. I'm such a nerd, but hey! It's ok by me :) Then I'm also taking band and choir at the high school.

Speaking of band, marching season is already underway! We;ve had two rehearsals now, and it's so strange coming back to the group as one of the oldest members with a lot of seniority. I calculated it out and there are three people in the whole band who have marched longer. That's scary. I'm not used to being on the upper end at all! But I'm the Band Council President this year, which I'm hoping will involve more leadership than it did last year. Overall I'm super stoked for the season. Our show is "Perpetual Motion" and is really amazing. Now I just hope that we can play it to its full potential. The highlight of the show for me is a rather long piccolo solo in the fourth movement...it makes everyone think of Bambi! Haha, it's really fun to play with lots of little bouncy triplets and such. AND, as an added bonus, this year's solo will actually have a sound system to amplify it so that others in the band actually know I have a solo! Last year I had one that no one could hear. It was rather sad.

Welp, that's my life at the moment! I hope everything has been splendidly wonderful for you all!

A Farewell To Arms

This week in biology has been the section on dissections. We started with a simple earthworm. No big deal, other than the fact that it was humongously long. Then we moved on to the clam. Also no problem, except it was one color and we couldn't identify the organs (I still say they don't have any organs. It's all a myth.) Then we did the crayfish. The smell was disgusting, but I could deal. After that was the fish. The stench reminded me of the Fisherman's Warf in San Fran, but I could deal.

Then today came.

Those of you who know me well know how much I love frogs. Not just cartoon frogs, but real ones too. And today was the frog day. I thought I was going to be alright, but it was so stinkin' cute! As my partner brutally ripped off the poor little guy's (okay, girl's) skin, I felt all the blood drain from my face. I started to get dizzy and my head hurt really bad. I managed to stick out the entire dissection and even touch a few of the organs, but I felt like I was going to pass out.

I officially don't like dissecting frogs.

I don't think I'd mind being a surgeon at all. I don't have a problem with blood and guts at all. It's just knowing that whatever it was we cut up could have had a normal life and is now sitting in pieces in our school dumpster just so I could say "Yep, that's a heart alright" doesn't appeal to me. At least if you're cutting on a person you can sew them back up and they'll go on with their life.

Sorry to gross some of you out. I hope you aren't squeamish.

It occurs to me that the last few posts have been particularly depressing and/or not optimistic at all. But really I've been rather happy these days. School is almost out, and summer is about to begin! Here's what I'm looking forward to this summer:

-Possibly acting in "Fiddler on the Roof"
-Going to Lebanon
-Going to Oklahoma
-Marching band (There's rumor of another sweet piccolo solo. Cross your fingers for me!)
-Catching fireflies
-Stargazing
-Flashlight tag
-Picnics
-Buying a car
-Getting my license
-But not in that order
-Hanging out a lot with Katie and Savannah before they leave for college
-Getting mentally ready for college myself, though mine is while I'm in high school
-Eating lots of ice cream
-Jogging to make up for eating lots of ice cream
-Wandering a neighborhood till I can hear the music form an ice cream truck
-Laying in the grass with the sun in my face
-Riding roller coasters
-Playing piano with the windows open and a breeze on my fingers
-Harmony Festival (barbershop style music camp)
-Writing outdoors
-Nature photography
-Sewing a new dress

And the list could go on and on and on.

But right now I have to get ready for work, so I'll say goodbye.

Have a splendid day!

*Hannah*
